How Chiropractic Treatment May Help Reduce Ear Infections in Kids
Ear pain is one of the leading causes of pediatrician visits for children. Many kids that suffer chronic ear infections may be continually given antibiotics only to have the problem flare up again later. This can be frustrating for parents as they see their children suffer from earaches and there appears to be no cure. Fortunately, the knowledge that some ear pain in children is caused by spinal misalignment has parents excited and bringing their kids to the chiropractor for an adjustment.
Ear pain is the main reason most children visit a chiropractor. Studies have shown that during the birthing process, some infants can develop misalignments in their cervical vertebrae. This misalignment can lead to nerve blockage, which in turn can affect the Eustachian tube. When this tube is blocked, fluid buildup can occur in the middle ear, leading to earaches. Chiropractors can help to realign these vertebrae and get everything flowing back the way it should be.
A study recently published in the Journal of Clinical Chiropractic Pediatrics shows a strong connection between chiropractic care and the reduction of ear infections. The study looked at 332 kids between the ages of 27 days and five years, all of whom suffered from chronic ear pain. Each child was given a series of chiropractic adjustments, and researchers were astounded to find that 80 percent of the children had not had another ear infection within the six months following the initial treatment. During those six months, the children engaged in maintenance treatments every four to six weeks. Joan M. Fallon, D.C., a lead researcher in the study, believes that these results can serve as a jumping off point for more clinical trials to be undertaken in order to fully understand the efficacy of chiropractic and reducing ear infections.
If your child is one of the millions that suffer from chronic ear pain, it may be a good idea to considering visiting a local chiropractic doctor that specializes in treating kids. They will be able to examine your child and determine if chiropractic could be a good addition to their wellness plan. Before you know it, you may be telling ear pain good-bye for good.
