Are You Ready to Maximize Your Efforts in the Cold?

By Tom Herrin

Putting behind the warm temperatures and all of the things that go with them can be a bit of a challenge as it begins to get cooler.  For most, it means a change of mindset.  People have to change their ways of preparation in order to be able to pull off a successful workout.  Twenty or 30 degrees difference in temperature can prove to be a considerable shock to the body.  Failing to prepare in the right way can mean more injuries to muscles and other soft tissues in the body.  The good news is that with the right kind of preparation, it can be a smooth transition from the previous warm temperatures.

Work Out with a Friend

Having someone else to account to can raise the level of expectation for anyone.  Rather than relying entirely on self-discipline, having another person to share the responsibility for motivation can help to keep people moving and improving.  Alternately prompting each other can ease the burden and provide the support it takes to make things work.

Eat Right

Even though most people may say they eat as they should, they may not take into account the need for a steady supply of foods that can provide a good source of vitamins.  Often thinking that consuming many of the heavier foods can maintain greater warmth, people may feel that their nutritional needs are met.  They should always include an ample supply of fresh fruits and vegetables.  Vitamins, antioxidants, and plenty of water can be available from these foods along with the benefits of lighter weight things that won't remain so as they try to carry on a good workout.

Be One with the Weather

You really have to appreciate whatever kind of weather comes your way.  If it is hot, get out there and enjoy the warmth but protect yourself from excessive heat.  If it is cold, you will need to dress appropriately so that you can still carry on your regular exercise routine but take the precautions needed to protect yourself from the cold and properly prepare yourself for physical activity while doing so.  On those good days, get outside while you can.  When it is too bad to do that, go ahead and plan to do something inside as you take advantage of your own space in the your home.
