Speaking in More Tongues May Boost Health

By Tom Herrin

For those who are limited to speaking and understanding only one language, guess what, there is a whole new world out there.  Learning another language is not just for the birds, as a matter of speaking, it can do lots of things to improve the mind.  At one time, many people felt that those who spoke more than one language were somewhat handicapped.  There was a general feeling that it limited their ability to learn well.  This was obviously a bias that was unintentionally placed on them.  The truth is that those who dare to learn another language may do themselves a world of good.

It May Help Prevent Dementia

In the past few years, a lot of attention has been focused on various kinds of dementia.  It is true that some of this may be due to the fact that people are living longer and it may be something that sometimes comes with aging.  Some studies have shown that people who speak more than one language have a later onset of dementia on the average.  It may be due to the fact that they are using their brain more, much like those who preserve their muscles as they use them more.  It makes sense as a natural process.

It May Help Hearing

The concept of speaking other languages as a help for hearing may seem like a strange concept, but it is very possible that it is true.  When people are trying to speak and understand another language, they may tend to be a better listener.  They may do so in a keener manner so that they do not miss anything that is being said.  It makes good sense.  Listening harder may be a learned thing just like so many other things.  That would mean that those individuals may practice listening in a more proficient way.

Don't Be Afraid to Try

A lot of us don't try to learn another language because we have become pretty spoiled to what we know.  We no longer have to spend much time and effort learning our present language, and it will require quite a bit of effort to learn something new.  The fact is, there may not be a better time to try to do so.  Many of us have a little more time on our hands right now, why not try to do something big  like learning a new language?
