Are You Trying to Avoid Sodas?

By Tom Herrin

As each of us seeks to do something positive to impact our health, we may do a lot of searching.  We work pretty hard at trying to exercise, and we try to eat right.  What else can we do that may make a real difference?  And by that term, I mean something that may affect health going forward.  It may occur to you that you could do some better by drinking more water, but beverages may be your one indulgence.  It is reasonable to allow some pleasures, so why not find the best way to enjoy your drinks and have some variety?

Proceed With Caution

We are all affected by advertising.  We must be careful not to internalize too much of what we see or hear.  There are so many different kinds of drinks on the market today that we can easily become overwhelmed.  Trying to sort out which ones actually do what they claim can be a big job.  It is important to read labels and compare.  Many of the drinks that are supposed to provide extra energy, or some other kind of boost, are filled with sugars.  They also may be packed excessively with something such as caffeine.  That energy may be an amount of this that could be dangerous to some.  If it picks you up like that, you may quickly become addicted to it.  And the effects on your heart may be a concern.  Just be careful.

Juices Are Generally Safe

There seem to be lots of juice drinks available.  This is another place for a little concern.  Those juices may be good, but it is important to look and see how much sugar is in them.  They may have plenty of vitamins, but they may have an overload of something else.  Once you have decided on the ones that will be included in your routine, enjoy them.  Many have vitamins and minerals that are great for keeping you in shape.

You May Make Your Own

It is simple to make safe and healthy drinks.  You can either make them at home or customize an order.  Many restaurants have add-ons that will hit the spot and not have too many calories.  I have seen everything from lemon to cherry to even chocolate for those who want to be daring.  My personal favorite is lime and strawberries added to water.  They are very light with very few calories. There is just enough of a sweet taste for me to know it is not plain water.  I love it and find it quite refreshing.
