Heart-Healthy Tips to Live By

By Brandi Goodman

During American Heart Month in February, and every month after, you need to carefully consider your heart health. A strong heart is necessary if you hope to maintain your well-being. Live by these heart-healthy tips for a better chance at living.

Choose the Right Fats

There are right and wrong fats to eat. You should avoid trans fats because they can contribute to heart disease. These types of fats clog your arteries and raise your cholesterol. Avoid eating processed foods that have hydrogenated oil listed on the label. This is an artificial option that's extremely unhealthy for your heart. Avoid excessive amounts of saturated fats as well.

Unsaturated fats are safe to eat. Monounsaturated and polyunsaturated are the words you should see on labels. Fish are often a good source, especially salmon, tuna, and mackerel. Almonds, olive oil, cashews, and avocado are also good sources.

Check Nutrition Labels

Other things besides fats can wreak havoc on your heart health. You want to avoid excess amounts of sodium, for example. Start making it a habit to check nutrition labels so you can be sure you're not eating foods high in ingredients that are bad for your heart.

Make It a Habit to Move

Sitting for extended periods of time can increase your chances of heart problems. The more time you spend in your day sitting and not getting any sort of exercise, the more you're hurting your heart. Make it a habit to move. Take the stairs instead of the elevator. Choose a parking space farther away that forces you to walk a longer distance. Dance as you do your housework. Adding in as much movement as possible throughout your day can make a big difference.

Sleep for Six Hours

You need six or more hours of sleep each night to maintain a healthy heart. People who get less than this are more likely to suffer from a heart attack or stroke. You tend to have increased levels of stress, and therefore higher blood pressure, when you're getting little sleep. You'll experience illness easier because of it. Aim for six to eight hours of sleep per night so you can get the rest your heart needs.

Always consider your heart health in everything you do. The choices you make all play a role in whether or not your heart is healthy and you are strong and well. Just a few lifestyle changes can drastically improve your chances of a healthier heart.
