Is It Time to Join a Gym?

By Genevieve Cunningham

Exercise is an important part of a healthy life. Most people are aware of the impact that exercise can make on their lives and overall health. They know that working out is something they should be doing to help create optimal wellness. And many people really try! In today's world, you don't even have to go to the gym. There are so many videos on DVD or on the internet to help you get fit from the comfort of your own home. But for some people, this isn't the best answer. Working out on your own is tough! If you feel like your workout plan isn't as good as it could be, take a look at these three signs that maybe it's time to finally join a gym.

You Need Accountability

Not everyone is good at personal accountability. Do you promise yourself to do the workout, but then skip it once you get home from work? Don't beat yourself up about it. Lots of people need extrinsic motivation in order to get it done. They need a trainer. They need a class full of people who will notice if you're not there. If you need that accountability, join a gym, and don't look back!

You Need Equipment

Let's be real about something: Some pieces of exercise equipment are really expensive. Treadmills, elliptical machines, weights, kettlebells. The price adds up quickly. And for most of us, we simply don't have that kind of spare cash to invest. If you've hit a wall with equipment, maybe it's time to go somewhere that can specifically invest in these big expensive pieces of equipment. Don't be afraid to pay the membership fee so that you can have access to steam rooms and machine weights and a huge assortment of other equipment. It may be all you need to pick your workout up a notch and improve your fitness for good.

You Need Friends

If none of your current friends are fitness minded, it's time to make some new ones. You don't have to ditch the old ones, but having a few friends who are also attempting to better themselves physically can make the process a little easier. If you don't have any friends like this, where are you going to meet them? At the gym, of course! If you need some friends to help you keep going every day, check out a class at your local gym and get started.

It's OK to work out at home. It's OK to work out at the gym. It's OK to work out at the local park or in your backyard. Choose what works best for you, and do it! As your fitness improves, you'll begin to notice a significant rise in overall health and the way that you feel every day, and where you workout will be of little consequence compared to sticking with it day in and day out.
