Miles Upon Miles: Will Running Really Work?

In the world of weight loss and fitness, there are plenty of people who are no stranger to logging the miles. Many perceive running to be king of all workouts. Want to lose weight quickly? Run. Want to tone up your bottom half? Run. Need more endurance? Run. But even with the high prevalence of running, a lot of people don't like it. Even half the people who do it dislike the actual task of running -- which brings up an important question: Is it even necessary? Do we have to run? Or can we live without it? To fully unpack the good and bad of running, take a look at what you need to know before your next mile. 

Does Running Work?

Running can definitely work. If you're trying to lose weight, running burns calories to help you do it. If you're trying to build muscles, running might help you burn the fat to then expose those muscles. If you need more stamina in general, running definitely improves your body's energy and longevity. If you're trying to improve your overall health and fitness level, running is a great place to begin.

Does It Have Disadvantages?

Though running is good for most people, it does come with some disadvantages. For some, running is really hard on the joints. It requires a pounding motion on the joints, and over time, this can wear them down and cause pain. Running is hard to keep up your whole life, and as you age, you may have to alter your workout -- which some people don't want to do. Running is good, but it's not without its troubles. Be cautious, and you can get the good from your jog without bringing too much harm to your body.

Do You Have to Do It?

Some people run only because they think they have to in order to be fit. But is that true? Or can you do something else? If you want to run, you should run. But if you despise it, you really don't have to do it. Choose a workout that you enjoy. Ride a bike. Walk. Swim. Hike. Running is good, but it's not the holy grail. If you're trying to get fit, running will work. But other kinds of exercise may work just as well. 

When it comes to health and fitness, the goal is improvement and enjoyment. If you like running, it's great to add it into your routine. If you don't like running, it's fine to choose something else that suits your needs and your interests. Health and fitness matters -- and with the right approach, you can be healthy and fit long into the future.
