4 Ways to Help Your Heart

By Brandi Swieter

Taking care of the heart should be one of the first goals on everyone’s get healthy to-do list. Poor heart health can lead to serious complications, such as heart disease and heart attack. With some simple ways to help your heart, no one should have an excuse as to why their hearts are in poor condition, other than genetics.

Eat More Berries and Almonds

Most people will agree that eating healthy in general is one of the best solutions for improving heart health. Not all fruits and vegetables contain the same nutrients, however, making it necessary to choose specific options to target a particular area of health, such as improving heart function. Berries do wonders for the heart because they contain antioxidants that fight off disease. Foods made with healthy fats that can lower cholesterol are also the most beneficial for the heart, and almonds fall under that category.

Add Physical Activity to Each Day

A full day should never be spent sitting down. The body needs physical activity to stay healthy. The heart, in particular, will get stronger and work more efficiently if people are getting up and staying active throughout the day. Just 30 minutes is all it takes. Spend it dancing, going for a walk, or even gardening, and the heart will be better for it.

Avoid Drinking and Smoking

Heart disease can develop quickly for those who drink and smoke. These activities should be avoided for anyone who wants to prevent their hearts from constricting blood flow and taking on more stress than it can handle. Individuals who already smoke or drink should do their best to quit if they want to increase their chances of improving heart health and give their bodies time to heal from some of the damage caused.

Work on Weight Loss

Individuals who are overweight tend to have weaker hearts because their hearts have to work twice as hard to keep the body going. By working on weight loss, people are giving themselves the chance to improve heart health. It will no longer have to work as hard for a body that is smaller and puts less stress on the organ overall. By eating healthier, staying active, and quitting smoking or drinking, weight loss should come natural.

Everyone should do more to take care of their heart and keep it healthy. With some simple ways to do so, improved heart health should be possible for all.
