Tips for Improving Liver and Lung Health

By Brandi Swieter

October is Healthy Lung Month. It is also Liver Awareness Month. People can take this time to learn some tips for improving the health of both bodily organs. Each organ has its purpose and needs to remain healthy if people want to experience good overall health.

Improving the Liver

The liver is essential for filtering the blood and keeping certain proteins developing that can help the process. A poorly functioning liver can create problems for the body and allow unappealing symptoms to develop, such as yellowed skin and eyes or severe bruising. Improving the liver is possible first through diet. A healthy diet rich in fruits and vegetables is one of the best ways to keep the liver functioning well.

Exercise is another important step. Fat tends to build up on the liver, causing disease. Getting regular exercise will help to prevent this from happening and keep the liver working well. Because maintaining a healthy weight is also important for a properly functioning liver, this step works in multiple ways.

Avoiding drugs and alcohol is also a necessary step in protecting the liver. Substances like these can destroy cells and leave scarring on organs. Alcohol abuse is one of the most common factors for people suffering from liver failure. It diseases the liver and causes it to stop working as it should.

Improving the Lungs

The lungs are necessary for breathing. People have a hard time taking in oxygen if their lungs are not working efficiently. The respiratory system can fail if the lungs are damaged or diseased. Improving their functioning can be done in several ways, including avoiding harmful toxins. Breathing in pollen, dust, and chemicals can have a harsh effect on the way people breathe. It can lead to illness. Cleaning the vents and ducts in the home and car is one solution for avoiding this. Opening the windows and keeping a ventilated space while cleaning is another.

Getting more exercise is also key. The more a person exercises, the better their lung capacity becomes. It may seem impossible at first. A person who struggles with their lungs will get out of breath quickly. However, the more a person works out and gets their heart rate up and their breathing labored, the more they'll be able to handle each time.

Both the liver and lungs are vital to overall wellness. If either of them are working poorly, people suffer in one way or another. Learning some tips for improving the health of both organs can be a huge help in keeping the body healthy and well overall.
