Do You Sleep In Because You Sleep Poorly?

By Tom Herrin

A lot of the time when people have a tendency to oversleep, it is assumed that they are staying up too late, working too hard, or are simply unmotivated.  While it could be some of those things, it is actually likely that they cannot sleep well.  As a result of that, they are not able to be refreshed by sleep.  It is a pretty common problem.  There are plenty of reasons why, but each can be very personal.  Sometimes identifying the problem requires making a close examination of one’s habits and practices.  A good thing is that it can probably be addressed to some extent.

Some Do Themselves In Without Thinking

People do things out of habit more often than not.  They just fall into a routine and never consider the effects it may have on their personal health and well-being.  Caffeine is such a part of some people’s day that it is second nature.  It is known for its ability to keep people awake but is often overlooked when they are trying to determine why they can’t sleep.  They may continue to pump themselves full of it all day in soft drinks, some foods, and energy drinks.  Wondering why they can’t sleep is like wondering why they are out of breath after running three miles.

There Are Other Factors Not So Obvious

An eating schedule can be a problem.  Eating too late or too much can inhibit sleep.  Some foods can help people to relax while others may do the opposite.  Lighting can be a real issue to deal with.  It can be a challenge for those who sleep days.  Sound can be either way.  For some it is a distraction, for others it helps to shut out distractions.  Even though exercise can be great for relaxing, it can keep people awake if they do so too late.

Personalizing Is Important

Any plan you decide to develop for better sleep should involve trying one thing at a time.  Keep what works and eliminate what doesn’t.  Take a look at your bedding, room arrangement, and room temperature.  Making a few small changes may be all it takes for you to get the kind of sleep that improves your health and helps you stay awake throughout the day.
