3 Things You Can Do Besides Browse Your Phone

By Genevieve Cunningham

Phones are almost like drugs. Once you start using a phone, you're going to be addicted. You're going to forget how to function without it. You're going to turn to it when you're bored. Phones are so powerful -- sometimes in a good way, and sometimes not so much. But the problem is that, even if we want to cut back on phone use, we don't know what to do instead. If you would like to break the addiction to your phone, take a look at these activities that you can do instead.

Reading is good for you. It keeps the brain sharp and even involves the imagination, which is something that we naturally lose as we age. And if you read something you like -- which you should absolutely do -- then it's also incredibly enjoyable. Just make sure that you read an actual book instead of reading something on your phone. Hit up the library -- yes! These still exist! -- check out some books, and keep them as handy as you do your phone. When you start to pull out your phone to waste time, pull out your book instead.

Journaling has become popular again. People journal for different reasons, but one of the most beneficial is to put your thoughts and intentions for the future down on paper. It doesn't have to be a journal about your emotions; it's not a diary. But instead, use it for planning. Use it for making big goals. Carry a small journal around in your bag or car, and write down some goals or affirmations instead of playing on your phone.

Puzzles and Games

Don't play games on your phone! Instead, make sure you always have a book of puzzles with you. These can challenge you, make you think and problem solve, and keep the mind young. If you like math, go for sudoku. If you're a words person, opt for a crossword or word search. Choose something you enjoy, and make it your new thing.

The phone isn't all bad. It has some wonderful and powerful functions in our world. But considering how addicted we all are, it wouldn't hurt to put it down from time to time. Use these activities as substitutes, and you may be able to switch a bad habit for a good one in the process.
