Self-Care: Essential Tips

Self-care is a term you hear a lot about these days. That may mean it blends into the background somewhat when you think about the priorities of your day, but there are some very good reasons to apply some self-care tactics in your life. Everyone has stressful situations they need to tackle each day and it's important to ensure you're healthy and happy as you take care of the things in your life that are most important to you, like your family. Here are some essential self-care tips to help you nurture yourself each day.

Understand Your Needs

Stop yourself at certain points during the day and ask yourself what it is you need at that moment. Maybe it's to sit down and have lunch. Or it could be that you need to take a break. Maybe you need to talk to a friend. Whatever it is, recognize that you need it and do your best to get it. Even if that means journaling in order to diffuse some of the day's frustrations.

Make Yourself Accountable

If you're going to really try to provide a little self-care for yourself, then you must make yourself accountable, so you'll actually follow through. Put it on your calendar or share with a friend what you need to do so that someone can call you out if you don't do it. Book something relaxing for yourself such as a manicure, massage, or exercise class. That way, there will be a penalty if you don't follow through with it. You'll be glad you did it!


One of the most basic ways to care for yourself is to ensure you're getting a good night's rest. Every single night you should get at least seven hours of sleep if not eight or nine. This will provide you with more emotional and physical energy throughout the day and you'll feel more centered.

Create a Routine

Your version of self-care may be a little quiet time each morning before the rest of the house wakes up or a nighttime skincare routine. Creating a routine for a little "me" time is one way to guarantee yourself some time for self-care. Start doing it every day and before you know it, it'll be a ritual you do each day and you'll be healthier and happier for it!
