Clean This Spring for Improved Well-Being

By Brandi Goodman

Spring cleaning is a popular pastime. The spring season is ideal for decluttering the home and yard because the weather starts to warm and the holidays of gift-giving are now over. Spring cleaning does more than get rid of junk, however. It also provides an opportunity for you to improve your well-being.

It Gives the Respiratory System a Break

Your respiratory system may be in overdrive lately. Dust sitting on accumulated junk does more than look unsightly. It can cause breathing problems as well. Pet dander can also be a concern. It's important to use this time to dust the house completely, vacuum, and wipe away any dust, hair, or debris so your respiratory system can catch a break. If you've noticed you've had a hard time breathing lately, watery or itchy eyes, a runny nose, or just not feeling well, it may be time to get some dusting accomplished.

It Helps Your Mental Health

Seeing clutter all around you can cause a lot of stress. If you've found yourself feeling overwhelmed with all the junk that's accumulated, it's time to clear it. Once you start to get some things accomplished you'll begin to notice how your mental health changes. While you may have once felt stressed, anxious, and worried, you may now start to feel unburdened and at ease.

It Focuses Your Concentration

It can be hard to concentrate on certain tasks you have to do when you have so much chaos surrounding you. Say you have to work from home and complete certain tasks. Knowing you have this clutter around you that should be taken care of can occupy your mind. You may not be as productive. Take some time out of your day to clear the room of anything unnecessary and distracting so you'll have better focus.

It Makes You Less Likely to Fall

Falls are common in cluttered households. You may find yourself tripping over piles of clothes as you try to exit your room or stumbling while you try to reach over the pots and pans on your countertop. If you want to prevent falls and accidents in the home, you need counters, walkways, and paths all kept clear.

Spring cleaning can be great for your overall well-being. You don't have to stick to the spring, either. Any time of year you notice the clutter is building and you're feeling bothered by the sight of it, take some time to get rid of it. You'll feel better mentally and physically because of it.
