Summer Health Swaps for Your Kiddos
By Brandi Goodman
The summer should be a fun time for kids, but many take it a bit too far. Overindulging on junk, sitting inside for hours, and not sticking to any routine can really throw kids off and leave them feeling unwell. Some simple summer health swaps for your kiddos will help them enjoy summer in a healthier and more beneficial way.
Swap Lemonade for Lemon-Infused Water
If your kids are used to drinking lemonade or soda pop all summer long, help them kick the habit. Try lemon-infused water instead. They'll get some much-needed nutrients from the lemon and the hydration they need from the water. Other drinks have too much sugar that can be harmful to the teeth and other aspects of health.
Swap Sweets for Frozen Fruits
Your kids will most likely be snacking all summer long. Swap out sweets and unhealthy options with frozen fruits. They're hydrating in the summer months and can help curb those cravings. Frozen berries or grapes can taste sweet while providing beneficial nutrients and vitamins. You can even mash up some fruit and freeze it over a popsicle stick for an alternative to that common summer snack as well.
Swap Sandals for Athletic Shoes
Too many people wear sandals all summer long. Although they may feel breathable and great for hot weather, they're not at all ideal for your overall health. Your feet and legs will throb after wearing sandals on a long walk. Make sure your kids are outdoors in athletic shoes only and not going barefoot or wearing sandals that they shouldn't.
Swap Video Games for Outdoor Games
Video games are fun for kids. Sitting inside playing them for hours, however, is not at all good for them. Make sure your kids are getting outside and trying some outdoor games instead. Look at the video games they like to play and help them find a similar alternative that they can do in real life. Play a game of basketball with them at a nearby court. Get on your bikes and race. Set up an obstacle course to challenge them. There are plenty of ideas out there.
A few simple health swaps are all it takes to make your child's summer more worthwhile. Don't let them become accustomed to unhealthy habits that they'll take into adulthood. Start them early with healthier habits that encourage well-being.
