Kick Pain to the Curb This Holiday Season

By Brandi Goodman

The holidays should be a time for happiness and cheer, but that isn't always the case. Certain tasks around this time can lead to pain if you aren't careful. Kick pain to the curb this holiday season with some tips in mind.

Wear Athletic Shoes While You Shop

Shopping in high heels is only going to spell trouble. Quite quickly, your feet and legs will start aching. Flats won't suffice, either. You need athletic shoes that offer comfort and shock absorption. The hard ground at shops and malls is not ideal for your body to walk on without some help.

Pack Healthy Travel Snacks

Sitting in the car for hours while you travel for your holiday plans will undoubtedly lead to back pain and stiffness. Start by packing healthy snacks. Your body thrives on nutritious foods. Many even work to alleviate inflammation and aches in the joints. Make sure you're eating well and not just stopping for fast food. Also be sure to drink plenty of water, and take regular stretch breaks.

Stick to Your Exercise Routine

Your body needs movement to stay limber. Avoid exercising during this timeframe and you're more likely to hurt yourself in the process. It's wise to stick to your exercise routine so you can keep your joints in good shape and retain your flexibility.

Stick to Your Sleep Routine

Your sleep routine is equally important. Fail to get adequate rest, and your tired, fatigued body will be quick to feel discomfort. Your body needs rest to recover and recuperate from all you did that day. If you don't get the rest it needs, it will be difficult to get anything accomplished the next day without feeling sore and groggy.

Take It Easy on Tough Days

If you already know your body is struggling, hold off on the shopping or holiday decorating if you can. Instead, take it easy on those tough days and let your body get the rest it requires. You can still find enjoyable activities to do. Get your family together for a holiday puzzle. Sit and watch a Christmas movie with some cocoa. Play board games. You have plenty of options to keep you occupied.

Eliminate the pain that can sometimes stem from holiday activities and enjoy the season instead. With these tips in mind, you should experience fewer aches than usual. It gives you more time to experience the joys of the holidays and less time stuck in bed hurting.
