Demystifying Spinal Secrets
By Randi Morse
Do you want to know a secret? No one knows every single thing about the body. There are still mystery situations that doctors don't understand. While there is a great deal of information about the body, and we know far more now than we did hundreds of years ago, there are still many things that mystify doctors. While it is likely that the average person will never know as much an experienced physician does, it is important to have some basic health information. The more you understand about your health, the more proactive you can be with your wellness.
One thing that we can demystify for you is some of the secrets the spine has. Let's talk about sitting up straight. When you're young, you're always told to sit straight in your chair. But why is sitting straight so much better for your back health than slouching? When you sit up straight you're maintaining the natural curve that is in your spine. The spine isn't ramrod straight. Look at any real skeleton and you can see that there is a gentle curve to it. It is the curvature of the spine that gives it the strength that allows it to support your body wait.
When I was getting older and taller I remember thinking that my grandmother was shrinking. She was a short woman to begin with, but she really seemed to get shorter as I aged. I thought this was just because I was getting taller, but once I was fully grown I noticed she still seemed to be shrinking. I was right. As we get older, the natural space between the discs and bones starts to shrink. This is a natural occurrence and is why we do tend to get shorter the older we get. While this is natural, there are still problems that can happen due to the disappearing space between the discs.
Central Nervous System
The final secret I'll share today is that your spine protects your central nervous system. This is an extremely important part of your body because it's in charge of every function in your body. When it's working free from any sort of restriction, your body is working optimally. Any sort of spinal restriction, however, can cause your body to be out of whack, potentially causing all sorts of problems.
Chiropractic care can help demystify the spine secrets you may not know about. Doctors at The Joint Chiropractic can help when problems arise from a shrinking spine or when you are dealing with joint restriction.
