Tired and Sluggish? Try Moving More
By Randi Morse
The older I get the more I'm getting used to feeling tired and sluggish. I honestly believed for a long time that this is simply how I was supposed to feel. Don't all adults feel groggy and exhausted most of the time? After all, if we didn't, coffee chains would not be so popular. The truth is that we shouldn't be feeling sluggish and tired all the time, especially if we are getting enough sleep. One reason you might be feeling so tired is because you're not moving around as much as you need to be. The technological society we live in promotes a sedentary lifestyle, which our bodies are not made for.
Kids and Teens
When I was young my mother constantly kicked me out of the house and told me not to come in until the street lights came on. Today's teenagers are more focused on devouring whatever new content dropped on Instagram or TikTok than they are about getting outside. Many childhood experts agree that children and teenagers need to get a decent amount of physical activity per day in order to keep their body working properly. Children between the ages of 3 and 5 should get at least three hours of activity in while preteens and teenagers should get at least one hour of a high intensity workout in a day. Children who don't get enough exercise are at risk of dealing with joint problems as they grow older.
Adults
As adults we are terrible about getting the amount of exercise we need. This is one reason why many people have spine and joint problems. Imagine that your joints are mechanical. What happens if you don't move a mechanical joint for a long amount of time? It rests and you can't move it easily. This is also true for human joints. The less we move our joints, the more difficult it becomes to be active. Our joints get stiff and sore, which makes us try to avoid being active. The more active you are as an adult, the better it is for your joints and for your entire body.
