Back-to-School Back Pain: 3 Tips to Try
By Virginia Laird
Like it or not, it is time to begin thinking about going back to class. While many are excited to get back in routine, there are some who will struggle with back pain. Much of the time such pain can be prevented. Chiropractors have offered a few tips you should try to help prevent back pain as you head back to your classroom. These include:
- Dress comfortably while at school
- Carry as little as possible on your back
- Get plenty of sleep
Dress Comfortably While at School
How you dress has a lot to do with the pain you do (or don't) feel. Chiropractors say that dressing comfortably is best. This does not suggest you should never dress nice. Rather, it is advised that you should make sure the clothing you purchase always fits comfortably. This includes your shoes. Research indicates that clothing that is too tight may restrict movement which can lead to pain. Likewise, shoes that offer no support can lead to pain throughout the back, neck, and legs.
Carry as Little as Possible on Your Back
Although you may feel the need to carry the world in your backpack, it is best to limit what you carry. Chiropractors consistently encourage patients to lighten the load of their bags and backpacks by taking only necessities wherever you go. Even still, these things can prove to be heavy. When you find that what you need to carry is too heavy, it may be best to invest in a bag with wheels to help keep the load off of your spine.
Get Plenty of Sleep
There is research that indicates that sleep can help prevent back pain. When the body is exhausted, it is more likely to suffer with a variety of pain, including back pain. For this reason, chiropractors advise that getting enough sleep can help keep back pain at bay. Research suggests that the average adult should get at least six hours of sleep each night. Still, some require much more than this. Start today trying to get plenty of sleep to help prevent back pain.
