Foods that Fight Disease Are Readily Available

By Tom Herrin

Most of us would like to do whatever it takes to stay healthy.  Too many times, we look for a pill or some other thing that we can do simply.  There are certainly lots of things available in condensed forms, but including them in our diets is really important.  The idea is to kill several birds with the same stone.  Excuse the reference if you are a PETA person.  Adding berries to your diet may do a lot for your health as well as provide variety to your meals.

They May Help to Manage Blood Sugar and Insulin Response

Managing blood sugar seems to be a bigger concern today than a few years ago.  There are likely many reasons, so when people can find foods that improve it, it can be a good thing.  One study showed that when berries were included in a diet, insulin levels could be reduced by more than  20 percent.  Indications were that it could be a benefit for those who have insulin sensitivity and those who don’t.

They May Have Disease-fighting Properties

The antioxidants in berries are considered to be pretty significant.  Antioxidants are known to reduce or prevent inflammation and help prevent some cancers such as those of the esophagus, mouth, colon, and breast.  There is some evidence that berries may be helpful in fighting Alzheimer’s disease.  Many believe that berries may be useful in fighting heart disease as well.  Some of these substances found seem to have the ability to keep arteries open.

They Are Good to Eat

Berries always go well as a snack.  Kids generally eat them when they are offered.  They may be eaten by themselves or in all kinds of dishes.  They seem to have found new popularity in recent years when consumed in smoothies that have become so commonly available.  We often eat them with cereal or yogurt as part of breakfast.  They are also pretty good in salads and lots of desserts.  While they may be most useful uncooked, they can still have plenty of benefits when cooked.  We love them in cobblers or pies.  The bottom line is that berries are a healthy food, and they can enhance a diet with a variety of flavors.  There are enough different kinds to try different ones each week for quite some time without repeating.  You will most likely find some that are a perfect fit with your family.
