Are You Trying to Cut Carbs?

By Tom Herrin

Keeping up with the latest trends in diet is sometimes like trying to hit a moving target.  It never really stays in the same place long enough to get a good fix on it.  With diets, much of what is current depends largely on what is recent information and how it is being shared.  At one time, the water diet was a big hit.  It was a simple diet based on the idea of drinking a large amount of water about a half-hour before eating a meal.  Thirst was satisfied and people were generally being filled with water.  Many of today's popular diets work on reducing the amount of carbs.

What Does Cutting Carbs Do?

Carbs are difficult to burn and digest.  When people take in excessive quantities of carbs, they end up being stored by the body.  Eating packaged foods or fast foods can cause people to load up on carbs.  Those who are prone to diabetes are especially vulnerable to the bad effects of a heavy carb diet.  Avoiding carbs from those processed foods such as breads can be difficult for the body to use effectively.

Carbs Play an Important Role in Health

People need carbs for energy.  The right kind may be used readily or stored for later use.  Those that are high in fiber can add bulk to food as it passes through the digestive system.  When people cut carbs excessively, muscle will begin to be used to take the place of them.  This will literally use up the muscles and decrease the amount of muscle in the body.  As this continues, it can have a devastating effect on health.  Watching the amount of carbs taken in can be part of managing health.

It Is All About Balance

When we eat a well-balanced diet, we can have what it takes to maintain overall good health.  Managing the amount of bad carbs, such as sugars, can make quite a difference in weight management.  Many of the programs now work on the basis of cutting carbs to an extreme so that it forces the body to use fat for producing the energy that is normally produced by carbs.  This plan can be effective, but we must be aware and work toward keeping that balance.  It is all a matter of making conscious decisions.
