Do Your Meals Look Good to You?

By Tom Herrin

There are a few things that may be said about all meals, and it is pretty much true.  If it looks good, people are far more likely to have a favorable impression of what to expect.  An attractive dish can trigger something inside that just seems to indicate that it will be enjoyable.  Choosing to have a variety of colors in a meal can assure that it will have a fairly good supply of vitamins as well as fibers, in many cases.  Cultivating a taste for this kind of color in meals will surely be a step in the right direction.

Greens Are Known for Healthiness

Even for those who may not have been raised with the idea that greens may be an important part of a healthy meal.  They are often associated with iron and vitamins.  Some of these are thought to improve mood and boost the immune system.  Spinach, kale, green beans, etc., are some pretty well known green vegetables.  Kiwis, limes, and pears are a few fruits that share that green color.  All of them have some similar properties.

Reds Are Not Just for Holidays

The red foods cover lots of different things that offer benefits to health.  Some of them are believed to help in the fight against some cancers, including that of the prostate and esophagus.  Some things from tomatoes and strawberries are thought to help those respectively.  Several other red foods have a reputation for doing their part.  A few of these foods are beets, cherries, red potatoes, red peppers, cranberries, and this list goes on and on.  These red foods are eye-catching as well as tasty.

Cover the Spectrum

I did not necessarily grow up with all of the colors on my plate.  I am from a time in which we saw lots of meat and potatoes.  We had plenty of greens but it was sparsely mixed with yellows.  We saw few blues or reds.  They were considered to be a little out of the ordinary.  My rearing in the southern part of the country generally lent itself to more of these foods.  As I have learned more about healthy foods, I have gained a great appreciation of foods with a large variety of colors.  I now look forward to a colorful plate and whatever is on it.  I know it represents good health.
