Learning Languages May Mean More Brain Space

By Tom Herrin

Many people likely did not think there were things they could do to actually increase brain capacity.  It is not exactly like growing vegetables in a garden.  The fact is, however, that there are things that may be done that can enable people to gain greater abilities in some areas and increase their mental capacity.  The brain is a funny thing, and there are actually several things that may be done to boost its potential.  Learning languages has been shown to be almost like giving the brain a jump-start.  It may suddenly be able to perform better in several areas.

Learning Languages May Add Volume

Strange as it may seem, learning new languages can make parts of the brain increase.  It is somewhat like exercising to build muscles.  When people challenge their mind, some good things can happen.  Several studies concluded that learning a new language may be able to increase the part of the brain that deals with memory.

Attention Span May Be Increased By Learning New Languages

Lots of people seem to struggle with attention span today.  As a result, many children and adults end up taking medication for such.  Some feel that increased use of electronic devices may contribute to the problem.  It has been observed that those who learn another language may have longer attention spans.  It is believed that it may have to do with the constant switching that must happen between these languages.  It also appears that these individuals are more aware of their surroundings.  It would certainly make good sense that any of this would necessitate greater ability to focus.

It Is Always Good to Broaden Understanding

Whatever is the case, we all would do well to work to increase our mental capacities.  The more we use our minds, the sharper they will likely be.  Learning a new language can be a challenge, but it is one that may leave us with a better understanding of communication in general.  I took Latin in high school but, obviously, found little opportunity to use it in everyday conversation.  I lost most of it.  At the time I was taking it, I found that I had a greater understanding of other languages as well.  I have been working to learn another language more recently.  This time, I feel that I have more motivation and a better grasp.  If it can help me to improve my learning capabilities, it will be ever that much better.
