Do You Worry About Sugar?
By Tom Herrin
We have plenty of things to worry about. If we are pretty conscious of our health, we want to do everything possible to maintain it. This may include diet, rest, and exercise. All of them are easy, yet none of them is easy. One of the things that many people are concerned about with diet is calories. Most of the time, we are thinking in terms of reducing calories. The one thing that usually jumps out at us is sugar. When we want to cut calories, we often try to see what we can do to reduce the amount of sugar we take in. Many of those products can be really high in calories, and sugar may do some other things that are not so good for our health.
How About Artificial Sweeteners?
The idea of having foods or drink that do not have sugar, or calories, was primarily developed for those who are diabetic. These individuals have some serious problems as a result of consuming these things. The first sugar substitute was developed in the late 1800s. I can only imagine what it must have tasted like. I can remember tasting some of these things when I was really young, and they were pretty bad then. As new products have been developed, taste has improved, but some of them are still not as healthy as we would like them to be.
Natural Substitutes
There are several kinds of sweeteners available now that purport to be natural. Some of them taste pretty authentic, but they still may have some other things to be concerned about. The potential problems are all over the place, so it is best to do our own research and move forward from there. It is also important to decide whey you want to go sugar-free. If you are diabetic, it is a pretty good reason. If you are concerned about dieting, you may want to exercise more caution.
Sugar Is Not All Bad
Even though sugar may have a bad reputation, it is not necessarily bad in small amounts. The problem is that many people don't know when to quit. We should use restraint in consuming sugar. The other problem with it is that it can do some big damage to our teeth. We can enjoy sugar, but we need to use some pretty good self-discipline. It may actually be better than some of the alternatives.
