Traveling Tips for Seniors

By Donna Stark

You've put in the work, so now it's time to sit back and enjoy! Retirement is definitely something to look forward to and the biggest perk of having all of those days to yourself is that you now have the opportunity to travel! And I mean really travel. I'm not talking about those weekend trips to nearby cities for your child's soccer tournaments or that short jaunt to the neighboring state for your cousin's wedding. I'm talking about trips that require more than a carry-on. Trips across country or overseas. Trips of a lifetime. Trips you always dreamed of. But as with so many other things, traveling changes as we age. So keep these tips in mind as you plan your next vacation.

Supplements and Medication

There is nothing worse than arriving at an exotic location only to realize you left your medication at home, so take your time with this. Carefully consider every medication that you will be required to take while away and make sure it gets packed! It's also good to keep your fellow travelers aware of your health conditions or allergies.

Clothing and Footwear

Well-seasoned travelers know that packing for all possible situations is smart, but that doesn't mean you need to bring your entire closet! Choose clothes that you can wear in layers, pack your most comfortable walking shoes that provide plenty of support and traction, and don't forget other essentials like your sunglasses, readers, or walking cane!

Airport Requests

If desired, seniors can request a ride on a cart or assistance with a wheelchair simply by asking at the check-in desk or calling ahead of time. This can make airport navigation a lot less stressful and is easier on a person's body if they have trouble walking long distances.

Destination Safety

Every traveler needs to be aware of their surroundings, but this is especially important for senior citizens as they can be seen as easy targets. You need to pay close attention to how you carry your valuables, so take a look at a few suggestions.

  • Wear a cross-body purse
  • Make sure all bags and purses can close securely
  • Don't carry everything in one place
  • Bring a copy of your passport with you
  • Adhere to basic safety guidelines for big cities
  • Learn emergency phone numbers for the country
  • Keep a copy of your hotel info handy in case you get lost

Time to Hit the Road!

With some careful planning and smart packing, you can be sure to enjoy the trip you are about to take and all of the ones you have planned for the future. Happy retirement!
