Summer Fun Is Easy
By Donna Stark
Do you remember growing up and spending the summers inside your home, scrolling through social media while sitting in front of the TV? Of course you don't, so why would you want that for your children? Sedentary lifestyles and childhood obesity are at an all-time high, which means collectively, our children are getting sicker as the years go by. It's time to change the course of their health, and the best way to do that is to get them moving. Need some ideas? Here are some fun, engaging, and totally kid-approved summer activities that your children will love to be involved in.
Basketball
The great thing about heading to the neighborhood basketball court is that you can do more than just play basketball. Whether you have one child or a whole crew of them, there's plenty of games to play. From H-O-R-S-E to 21 to around the world to just a good, old-fashioned game of basketball, there's plenty of fun to be had!
Beach Volleyball
Planning on making a couple of trips to the beach this summer? Or are you lucky enough to live near one? If so, don't forget your volleyball. Beach volleyball is a great way for your children to get some exercise while you work on your tan.
Frisbee Golf
If going to a beach isn't your thing, head to the golf course ... Frisbee golf, that is! Frisbee golf is a relatively relaxing sport to play that will take up the bulk of your children's day. The premise of the game is similar to golf. From the designated starting point, players take turns throwing their Frisbees. The goal is to reach the "hole" in as few throws as possible. This may sound easy to do, but if there are rivers, ponds, and trees along the course, it could be more challenging than expected.
Tennis
Tennis, anyone? Few things are more fun than a competitive (or not-so-competitive) game of tennis, so grab your children and head to the courts. But don't forget your jugs of water! It's going to get hot, especially if the courts you choose are outdoors.
Cycling and Skateboarding
Are you tired of driving your children to their activities? Stay home then, but keep your kids moving by sending them outside with their bicycles or skateboards. They are sure to have fun cruising up and down the street or showing off their latest trick. Either way, their bodies are getting a workout while you are getting a much-deserved break from driving.
Summer Fun Is Easy
The hardest part about keeping your children active during summer is choosing an activity they will enjoy doing. Hopefully, the suggestions above will help, but don't forget to let your children relax a little bit too! After all, everyone deserves a break every now and then. Just be sure to do it in moderation!
