Why It's OK to Take a Little Break From Exercise

By Genevieve Cunningham

Many people feel about exercise the same way they feel about eating a healthy diet … it’s a necessary evil. Though getting in some exercise and eating some veggies isn’t the worst thing in the world, it’s sometimes hard to resist the temptation of skipping the gym and eating a piece of cake instead of your greens. But as it turns out, maybe a little break from the normal healthy lifestyle isn’t a bad thing after all, especially when it comes to exercise. If you’re feeling a bit burned out in the workout department, take a look at these reasons why taking a break might be a good thing after all.

Rest Equals Growth

Many people mistakenly believe that they have to keep going and going and going if they want to see results. While consistency is definitely necessary, your body also needs rest, as this is when the most growth happens. If you’re not resting, your muscles won’t be able to get any bigger. This is reason enough to cut yourself a little slack and take a break when you feel like you can’t go on anymore.

Lack of Rest Can Lead to Inefficiency

When your body is exhausted, it can lead to inefficiency in the body and in your workout. You may find yourself simply going through the motions of your workout instead of focusing and giving it your all. Or more importantly, you may find various systems in the body aren’t working properly. Digestion may slow down, metabolism may stall, and you might just feel rundown overall. If you want your body and mind to work efficiently, it’s imperative to give them a rest from time to time.

Rest Gets You Focused and Motivated

One of the hardest parts about exercise is staying motivated. This is especially difficult when you feel like you’re not seeing results. So what can you do? Just take a break. Allow a day or two to go by without any exercise. It won’t be the end of the world, and your body might really appreciate it. But more importantly, your mind might appreciate it even more. Sometimes a break in the ordinary allows you to reset your focus and motivation so that you can hit it harder than ever when you go back.

Even though exercise is important, we sometimes just take it too seriously. We think that we can never have an off day or that we can never have a break. Luckily, nothing could be further from the truth. If you need a break, take it, and feel zero guilt about it. Strategically planned breaks in your workout routine might help you make bigger gains in your health and leave you feeling better than ever before.
