Get Out the Hockey Sticks and Get Healthier
By Tom Herrin
Most people recognize their need to get in better shape. Even if they are currently on a steady workout program, they may want to enlarge their group to include more friends or family members. There are lots of options available, but motivation is often the real key to success. So many people cringe at the idea of another workout that when they can have to opportunity to do something that is a little more fun, they are more likely to jump in. One of those that is the least remembered but still a lot of fun is field hockey. For those with good inside space, gym hockey is a compatible game. It does not take very long for people to get excited about this game and produce good results.
It Is Sure to Improve Cardio
When people play field hockey, they will be moving around, just as players do in soccer. In a recreational form of this game, it need not be highly competitive. This means that people can go at their own pace and avoid pushing themselves too much. There is a lot of running, stopping, walking, and starting over again. A work and rest repeat is a good way to work and build the heart and circulatory system.
It May Improve Strength
Much of the work involved in playing hockey can help to build strength in the body’s core. As people run, or move faster, while they are operating a stick, the muscles get a decent amount of work that can build muscle. It has both repetition and force. Both of these can work together to increase power. Generally as people improve strength, they are able to burn more calories as well as be more efficient with their efforts.
It May Improve Balance and Coordination
For those of us who are getting older, and I am a member of that group, we find it more challenging to do some ordinary daily activities. Accidents occur more frequently when we have problems in these areas. Activities such as hockey require more development in overall coordination. It is just enough to help to sharpen us. Balance is needed to move and strike the puck at the same time. For me and my family, it is a really enjoyable activity and something enough out of the ordinary that we become highly engaged in it. Try it for yourself, and see the response in your family or circle of friends.
