Dr. Cody Somerville began his journey as a local healthcare provider at The Joint Chiropractic in 2023 when he joined the clinic location in West Asheville to continue doing the work he finds so rewarding.

His favorite part of working as a chiropractor is “being able to help patients get pain relief without drugs,” he says, “and having the ability to heal patients with just my hands.”

Dr. S., as his patients call him, grew up in Parkersburg, W. Va. where he spent his time working on a farm and playing football with friends. “With all of these activities my body was regularly in pain, especially my low back,” he says. “It was in high school when I first went to the chiropractor and found out that I no longer needed to take four ibuprofen just so I could perform in sports and at work. This led me to decide that I wanted to be a chiropractor.”

Before moving to Asheville, Dr. S. worked in Port Orange, Fla., Denver, and Glenwood Springs, Colo.

His wife, Karley, enjoys the outdoors, whether it’s hiking, camping, or paddleboarding. In his free time, Dr. S. enjoys staying healthy through cardio and resistance training during the week, while keeping his body moving nearly every weekend with hiking, paddleboarding, fishing, or hunting. “Any type of exploration and adventure is always welcomed, especially new experiences,” he says.

Dr. S. studied anatomy at Marshall University in Huntington, W. Va., where he earned a Bachelor’s degree in exercise science. He received a Doctorate at Palmer College of Chiropractic in Port Orange, Fla.

“I have had great success treating and relieving headaches through chiropractic adjustments,” he says. “I am excited to work at this clinic due to its connection with the surrounding area and being able to help like-minded people.”

In Case You Didn’t Know

He says he keeps extra virgin olive oil on hand “because of its amazing anti-inflammatory properties and its use in everyday cooking scenarios.”

If he could plan the ideal dinner party including four famous guests, Dr. S. would invite Leonardo Da Vinci, Nikola Tesla, Galileo, and Louis Pasteur. “I would love to understand how their minds worked to be such great inventors,” he says.

One of the coolest experiences he’s ever had was moving to a small town in Colorado. “I lived there for three years and over that time I learned a lot about the area, the people there, and about myself,” he says. “Although I was far from home, it gave me a better understanding of how to be a better person to my family. The distance made my heart grow more fond of them, which is largely why my wife and I have moved back to the East Coast to be near members of the family.”

One of Dr. S.’s favorite books is Make Your Bed: Little Things That Can Change Your Life … and Maybe the World. “Learning to develop simple daily habits gives you the assurance that everything you do matters,” he says.

If he wrote an autobiography, Dr. S. would entitle it Exquisite Adventures.

His grandmother gave him advice he treasures including, “Always water your plants, both physically and metaphorically.”

If he was giving advice, Dr. S. would recommend to people that they “always look forward in life. If you are constantly looking behind you, then you are likely to trip and fall.”

One of the coolest experiences he’s ever had was moving to a small town in Colorado. “I lived there for three years and over that time I learned a lot about the area, the people there, and about myself,” he says. “Although I was far from home, it gave me a better understanding of how to be a better person to my family. The distance made my heart grow more fond of them, which is largely why my wife and I have moved back to the East Coast to be near members of the family.”

One of Dr. S.’s favorite books is Make Your Bed: Little Things That Can Change Your Life … and Maybe the World. “Learning to develop simple daily habits gives you the assurance that everything you do matters,” he says.

If he wrote an autobiography, Dr. S. would entitle it Exquisite Adventures.

    I have been a customer of The Joint for several years. I have been to many clinics all over the southwest. I have always had decent to good luck, until I came to this Grand Junction clinic. I drove 2 hours each way to go here! Today was the worst chiropractic experience I've ever had! The first time I went here was about a month ago and that chiropractor did nothing for me. Today I had a different chiropractor and like everytime I go in, I tell them whats wrong, and tell them what works good on me. This guy today didnt listen to anything I said and told me lay down face first where he proceeded to shove down on my middle back so hard that I actually yelled out and my entire bodies muscles contracted. My legs actually came up and almost hit my rear. He then says, "oh! Wow! Thats tight, maybe we should try something else!". Then he says "maybe you should just go get a massage, I cant fix you", and he proceeded to try to sell me a massage at a local massage company! I have never got a massage before, as chiropractors could always fix me. I walked out in 10 times more pain than when i came in! I went to get groceries after and had to abandon that because I was hurting so bad!! I will never go to this location ever again!!! Id advise everyone to stay away! Do they not know they could screw up someones entire life and body with these inexperienced unprofessionals!

    This location is a money grab. They charge a lot for 5 minute sessions, they don’t actually help out. The owner called me and was rude and disrespectful the whole conversation. The front desk lady gave me attitude and was very disrespectful when asking to cancel my membership. The doctors don’t have any idea of what they are doing. They don’t care for there customers and I will be pressing charges for injuring my back more then it was already. Definitely won’t recommend them to anyone.

    Be careful when checking out, I sell subscription services so I knew what questions to ask but I wasn’t shown a contract just asked to sign, that being said… it’s so worth it! It’s a great deal financially and Dr. Cody is very knowledgeable he was able to explain why I was experiencing the pain where I was and even infer why and he was spot on! He set me up on a treatment schedule and after my first appointment, the day before my next, I’m starting to feel achey again, so his timing is perfect too.

    The staff was so friendly and inviting. I came in with a complaint that had been going on for about two months. The chiropractor took a lot of time to assess my condition and ask follow-up questions. She also gave me stretching exercises to do at home. She walked me through what she was doing with the adjustment. After one visit and ongoing stretches my pain is now almost completely gone and my range of motion is back.     I had a rib issue flare up on a Saturday when pretty much every other chiropractic office in Grand Junction was closed, and The Joint was about to close as well. I called anyway, and they were incredibly kind and understanding and made sure I could get in. Lexi at the front desk was professional, helpful, and genuinely sympathetic, which immediately took some stress off the situation. Dr. Scott (I believe that was his name) was excellent — he worked on both my lower back and my rib, and I walked out feeling noticeably better.     I have gone to another chiropractor in town for years and decided to give The Joint Chiropractic a try. I am so glad I did. Dr. Candice Kingsman is absolutely phenomenal and listens before she starts working me over. The consultation was very informative and she explained everything she was going to do before she did it and why she was going to do the manipulation. She was gentle as she did the adjustment. For the price of one adjustment at other places in town, I get a monthly subscription that incudes 4 adjustments. You cannot beat this price at all.     My 15-year old son plays multiple sports, and we came here to see if getting an adjustment would help him with a back injury he’d had lingering for almost a month…and help him it did!! Candice was awesome!!! She explained things as she went along and took her time making sure she covered everything. He REALLY needed to be adjusted and realigned. She was excellent with the way she handled him and she didn’t hurt him in any way… her skills and help definitely aided in him healing a lot more quickly! We are very grateful for her help. I decided to also have an adjustment done, once I saw how much Candice helped my son. ;) It’s been a few years since I’ve received chiropractic care. Candice also did a great job helping me resolve some of my long-term issues and she even got my neck to pop…which is a difficult task, believe me.     Great patient interaction, Dr. Scott did a great job examining my areas of concern, and an even better job adjusting me. I felt great leaving, all the stiffness in my neck gone and my lower back. They have great plans also that will save you money. I will definitely be back again, and recommend anyone that is thinking about it to definitely go see these guys.     I was able to get paper work completed and was able to see the Dr. Scott very quickly. All went well with the exam and the treatment. The pain was relieved immediately and I walked out feeling no pain after spending a month in nasty pain.

    I’ve been a Joint customer for a couple years now and have visited multiple locations across the country. The Joint locations have always had a least one chiropractor that was worked well for me. However, I’ve seen two different Dr’s at this location and the adjustments have not met the level of treatment I’m accustomed to. Added to this the wait times here are extended. I waited nearly 45 mins for an adjustment. The Joint has always been good to me. And I hope this location will improve.

    I had a great experience on my first visit. The Dr. was great at explaining everything he did and what was going on with my back. He also gave me stretches to do at home. They were not pushy at all and every one was very friendly. I will definitely be back.

    Dr Kingsman was very knowledgeable and after doing an evaluation she explained clearly what was apparently going on with my sciatica and the treatment they offered that would fix the problem. When arriving at Joint Chiropractic my lower back was in pain and it was painful to walk. After the treatment the lower back pain was almost entirely gone. After only one treatment it was already producing good results!
