Let Leafy Be a Kind of Greens at Your Table

By Tom Herrin

Most people are aware that they have a need to include some kind of greens on their menu, but  many steer away from them anyway.  For lots of kids, greens are a kind of toxic substance, or so they may think.  If they have not had the opportunity to develop a taste for them, there is a good chance that they don't have an appreciation for their flavor.  If they are not introduced to them, they may be missing a valuable part of a good diet.  When it comes to improving diet, adding leafy greens may provide a great boost for health and a little variety.

They May Help to Maintain the Skin

Even if they don't want to admit it, lots of people want to keep their skin appearing as young looking as possible.  They may even go to great lengths to accomplish this.  They also spend a good bit of money.  Adding leafy greens to a diet may help to provide the nutrients that can keep the skin in good condition.  The higher water content in them can also help to keep moisture in the skin which may help prevent wrinkles.

They May Support the Heart and Circulatory System

Leafy greens can help supply nutrients that may be able to remove many of the materials that can block blood vessels.  This can be a great support in managing cholesterol levels as well as blood pressure.  This can also help to strengthen the heart and allow it to work more efficiently.  It can reduce the chance of heart attack and stroke.  These leafy greens may make a pretty good meal for supporting this important system.

They Can Help With Weight Management

When we add leafy greens to our meals, they can do more than just look good.  They may be able to help us in our efforts to manage our weight.  They are high in nutrients which can keep us feeling more satisfied and less hungry.  Since they have a high water content, they can also help us to avoid being thirsty.  Many times, when people feel hungry, they are actually thirsty.  The bulk in leafy greens can be filling as well.  On top of all of that, leafy greens can make a pretty good meal.  I enjoy them in salads as they can make a light meal while still providing us with the energy to get up and go.  That is a pretty good combination for keeping off those pounds.
