How to Keep Your Balance Just Like Jimmy Fallon

In the midst of today's nationwide health commotion, losing one's balance can suddenly become a reality as we move faster and faster, and often think more slowly.

I don't know about you, but I sometimes feel like I stepped into a bad dream and it is incredibly hard to stay calm and keep my balance. 

How Jimmy Does It

I have been particularly amused by late night comedian Jimmy Fallon's take on all of this in his nightly shows at home. He has a beautiful wife, two adorable little blonde daughters, and a loyal blond dog. Jimmy keeps track of all of them and keeps going no matter how crazy it gets. Guests pop up, kids giggle, and the dog wanders off. Last night he invited us into his kitchen and made nachos. They looked wonderful, and for a moment, it was just like the old days before everything changed.  Jimmy is truly a master juggler.

My attempts to cope do not always turn out as well. I definitely follow Jimmy's lead to accept life as it is and do my best, but it does not always turn out as well as it does at Jimmy's house. Things get scrambled, lost, and mixed up as I sleep less, eat too much, and occasionally get into arguments with my cat, Jeeves. He knows something has changed but he is not sure what and still expects meals to show up on time anyway. If they don't, he thinks nothing of tapping my feet and meowing until he gets service.

Overall, there are probably some things that will help us do as well Jimmy does. See if these might help

  • Ask yourself what really counts and let the rest go
  • Leave a little extra room around deadlines
  • Look for the silver lining in the things people do for you
  • Take time to be thankful every day for family, friends and life
  • Help wherever you can with calls, texts, emails, gifts and donations
  • Step back and marvel at how many dedicated people there are out there

While You Are at It ...

Try to create your own magic with different approaches.

Fix a really big special breakfast - Beyond your usual eggs or oats, take the time to create a little feast once in awhile.

Reverse your daily schedule - Some days give yourself permission to mix up your day a little, adding a little variety to all of the sameness that we seem to be enduring.

Surprise family and friends - Take the time to picture how your friends and family must be feeling in the midst of everything and send them jokes, gifts, or whatever else you think would appeal to them. You may be lucky enough to give them a boost just when they need it the most.

Jimmy makes it look easy, but it actually will be easier if you relax, go with the flow and keep believing.
