Celery juice is a hot topic in today's diet world. It seems as though everywhere you turn, you'll find someone raving about this morning drink. You'll hear numerous benefits claimed, personal anecdotes praising the practice, and promotional pitches that make it seem like an absolutely essential part of healthy living. In the grand scheme, celery juice is fairly new to the scene, though there is an entire book dedicated to its place in your health. So what's the truth? Is it really the miracle we're all looking for? Or is it just another fad? If you've been considering trying celery juice for yourself, take a look at the good and the bad so that you can make an informed decision for your own health.

The Advantages


There's no doubt that there are benefits to consuming celery juice on a regular basis, at least according to personal anecdotes. Some of the potential benefits include:


  • Digestion - Some people claim that celery juice improves their digestion. This might be because celery is over 90 percent water, which means it can move your digestive tract and keep you feeling light and clean from the inside out. 

  • Skin - Though some people notice a purge of their skin in the first few weeks of celery juice consumption, many claim that the eventual result is clear skin. 

  • Energy - One of the most sought after benefits is more energy. Celery juice is supposed to keep your body better balanced -- alkalized is the phrase used in the book. And when your body is balanced, it frees up energy to use at your discretion. 


The Disadvantages


Not everyone is convinced that celery juice works. In fact, some claim a few disadvantages to consumption. Some of the most common include:


  • Potential toxins - While celery juice is generally safe, there are some downsides. Too much celery can cause the body to form kidney stones due to oxalates found in celery. If you're using non-organic celery, there is also the potential for toxins due to farming. 

  • Digestion - This is a benefit seen on the advantages, but for some people it's too much. Celery juice causes some people to have painful digestion. They get stomach cramps and bloating; it's harsh on their digestive tract and causes problems. You won't know this problem until you try it, but it's important to keep in mind before diving in.
