The Health Advantages of Having a Pet

By Brandi Swieter

Picking out a furry friend to take home isn’t just something fun to do. It provides a lot of benefit that many people may not even realize. Having a cute animal to call your own isn’t just fun, it also has health advantages. Anyone looking to improve health that doesn’t yet have a pet can get one to help themselves.

Reduces Stress

People who tend to feel stressed often should consider adding a pet to their home. Having an animal companion around actually helps reduce stress more so than having a loved one. People tend to bond quickly with their pets, and seeing the sweet face of a loving cat or dog can be all it takes to ease some tension from a person’s hard day.

Boosts Mood

With stress reduced, people with pets are much more likely to experience a boost in mood. It’s hard to be angry when looking at an adorable face or having a pet come up and lick you as they try to get some attention. Being around animals in general is a great way to improve mood and feel better overall.

Improves Immunity

Pets tend to have dander from their fur. If people get pets at a young age, they’re more likely to develop an immunity to some common allergens. This means fewer allergies as adults and less sneezing. Getting a pet as an adult won’t stop allergies that are already there, but it can help young people. Parents with kids should get a pet to give them this advantage.

Opportunity for Exercise

Many people who live alone don’t get outdoors for much exercise. Some are very solitary and simply stay in the house. Those with pets, particularly a dog, are more likely to get outside for some exercise time. They’ll take their dog on walks or for runs, and even play fetch with them. These activities provide exercise to both the person and the pet. Many dogs even enjoy heading to the beach for a swim, and there are special dog parks people can Sparky for some socialization with others.

Just having the pet at home isn’t all it takes. People need to care for their pet and maintain a good relationship with them to be able to get these advantages. Animals need the companionship just as people do, so it’s a win-win situation for all involved.
