Alleviate Your Allergies Naturally

By Donna Stark

It's that time of year when your front porch and walkway are covered with a coating of bright yellow dust that has fallen from the trees surrounding your property. It's also that time of year when you find yourself waking up with itchy, watery eyes, a runny nose, congestion, and dry coughing fits. Yes, you guessed it ... it's the time of year for allergies! And for many, this time certainly isn't a time filled with fun. In fact, allergy season is quite the opposite for them! Can you think of something that is miserable to deal with? Well, multiply that by 10 and you have allergy season!

Alleviate Your Allergies Naturally

If allergy season is getting the best of you, but you don't want to add any more medication to your routine, then try some of these natural remedies first! Take a look.

  • Drink more water - Many allergy sufferers can find some relief by drinking the recommended amount of water every day. Water can help flush the body of foreign irritants and maintain normal histamine activity.
  • Shut your windows and doors - It may be a beautiful day outside, but if the pollen count is high, be sure to keep the windows and doors closed. You should also install new filters in your home as often as they are recommended.
  • Establish a new routine - Are you coming in from the outdoors? If the air is thick with pollen, you may want to consider changing clothes, washing your hands and face, and leaving your shoes at the door. Every time you come inside, you have the potential of bringing those outdoor allergens in with you, so wash them off!
  • Mask it or rinse it - If you are forced to be outside due to a job or yard work, protect yourself and your airways by wearing a mask, and if one isn't available, rinse your nose when you go back inside.
  • Don't exercise during peak pollen times - When pollen counts are high, you may need to skip that morning jog through your neighborhood and hit your local gym's treadmill instead. Or, at the very least, push back your outdoor exercise to a time when the counts drop.
  • Don't hang your clothes out to dry - What's the point of washing the allergens off your clothes if you are only going to hang them back outside to dry? It's easy for allergens and pollen to attach themselves in the fabric, but you can avoid that by using a dryer instead. And if you have to line dry clothes, do so inside.

Spring Should be Fun

Don't let allergies become the bane of your existence during this time of year! Try these natural remedies before you add more pills to your diet and start enjoying the beautiful weather! Springtime should be fun, so get your allergies under control and head outside to enjoy it!
