Fall Activities and Healthy Spines

By Donna Stark

As one season changes into another, many of our outdoor activities change too. And if we aren't careful with the new movements these activities bring, our bodies will certainly pay the price. Sure, we already know that we should prioritize the health of our spines but sometimes, fun can make us forget, can't it? Take a look at how you can keep pain and discomfort away during your favorite fall activities with the following tips from your local chiropractors at The Joint Chiropractic.

Raking Leaves

The gorgeous colors, the cool air ... be careful! You don't want to fall into that trap of beauty! Raking leaves and stuffing them into trash bags is a serious workout. So, before you begin, take a moment to prepare your body and warm up with some light stretching. Make sure you don't fill the bags too full either! You still need to lift and carry them safely when you are ready to dispose of them.

Apple Picking

Heading out to the orchard to pick a basket or two of apples is a common weekend activity for many families but just as common as that is, so are the muscle strains you may end up going home with. How many times have you lifted your young one above your shoulders to pick "the perfect fruit?" And how many times have you bent over to lift the apple basket only to say, "Whoa. It's heavier than I thought?" It is important to remember your proper lifting techniques when doing both, so be sure to bend at the knees, keep your spine in a neutral position, and avoid any unnecessary twisting of the spine.

Fall Decorating

We tend to decorate the outside of our homes more during the fall season than any other. Whether that means you are adorning your home with bales of hay, scarecrows, and multiple pots of mums or are going straight to the spooky side and are pulling out the ghost inflatables, hanging skeletons, and house-sized spider webs, it's good to be aware of how you are moving your body. Again, make sure you are lifting everything with proper form and use the proper equipment to hang things. You don't want to find yourself slipping off a chair when a ladder would have been more suitable for the job.

Enjoying the Fall Activities

Your local chiropractors at The Joint Chiropractic hope you get a chance to enjoy all your favorite fall activities free of pain, discomfort, and injury. And if something were to go wrong, remember ... they will always have your back!
