Jogging: How to Find Your Happy Place
By Virginia Laird
For those who like the idea of jogging but have yet to find the endurance and willpower to pursue it, there is hope. If you are like me, you love to listen to the stories of those who marathon train and long for just half of the dedication and determination. Fitness experts offer some advice to those of us who have the desire to get fit while learning to enjoy a jog. Some of the advice includes:
- Start small
- Have a goal
- Find inspiring music
- Consider a running buddy
Personal trainers teach the importance of starting small. All too often, some want to jump out there and begin a jogging regimen by starting with three or five miles. This is detrimental to your overall end goal. While it is possible to struggle through to the end of your desired run, the battle can be enough to prevent you from jumping back out there the following day. Fitness instructors advise it is better to begin with a mile or even a half-mile. This allows you to feel good about your success and add as your body (and mind) is ready.
Have a Goal
What is your goal? Do you simply want to enjoy jogging or do you have a certain distance in mind? Having a goal is the best way to ensure success. Personal trainers teach that those who do not set goals tend to fall off the trail as a variety of distractions may get in the way. Keep in mind that goals can change. If your initial goal is too massive, consider setting some short-term goals to help you achieve your desired end result.
Find Inspiring Music
Music is what keeps me going when I am out on a jog. It can be easy to lose yourself in the beat. Finding your music is a simple task of trial and error. Start with your favorites and grow from there. Finding great music can be the key to keep you moving.
Consider a Running Buddy
For those who seriously struggle to get out the door, it can be nice to have someone to share this time with. A jogging buddy can help keep you motivated, as well as encourage you along the way. Don’t be afraid to ask a friend who does not yet jog. This journey can be something for the two of you to begin together.
Now you are set and ready to hit the trails. Get your jogging clothes on, charge your headphones, and hit the trail. Best of luck on your jog! You can do it!
