How to Safely Indulge on National Junk Food Day

By Brandi Goodman

National Junk Food Day arrives in July, though not many people stick to only one day per year to enjoy the many junk foods available at their fingertips. There are ways to safely indulge on this day and any other so that you don't overdo it. You'll still get to enjoy some of your favorite snacks without worrying about the calories consumed.

Stick With Options Deemed Healthier Than Others

You can still go ahead and grab a snack from the store if you're in a hurry. Just be sure to stick with the options that have been deemed healthier than others. This means avoiding the cookies and cakes and instead choosing some tortilla chips and salsa, beef jerky, pork rinds, or dark chocolate. They all have their setbacks, but these choices are far better than many of the others you could make.

Create Homemade Versions of Your Favorites

Store-bought options are often packed with calories, sodium, and sugar. Limit these amounts by creating homemade versions of your favorites. You'll still get to enjoy the things you like but without all the unnecessary ingredients. Plenty of healthy.

Make Substitutions

Simply making any recipe you find is not ideal. Instead, look for healthier versions that make substitutions. This will help you to reduce your sugar intake even further. Using coconut oil instead of butter, for example, can help to cut down on fat. Stevia instead of regular sugar or using honey are also great options for sweetening dishes.

Limit Your Amount

If you decide to grab some junk food from the store, you can still help yourself indulge safely by limiting the amount you eat. You don't have to devour a whole package of cookies in order to get your fix. Just eat a few so you can satisfy your craving.

Share With Friends

Even if you limit the amount you eat today, it will be tempting to continue eating the food you bought with lots left over. Share with friends instead so you each eat a portion and there is nothing to take home. You get to enjoy your junk food that day without having it in the house to tempt you the next as well.

On National Junk Food Day or any other time you're feeling like indulging on not-so-healthy choices, there are still ways to help yourself make better decisions. You don't have to stick with veggies and fruits all day, but you can make some substitutions that will reduce the calorie count and keep your sugar content lower than it otherwise would be.
