Have the Whole Family Create a Happy Space

By Brandi Goodman

Stress knows no age limit. Any member of your family can feel stressed at any given time for a number of reasons. For this reason, it's important that the whole family creates a happy space. This gives each person their own area where they can go to unwind, relax, and de-stress from a particularly hard day.

Separate Each Space

Even if two people enjoy the same things, it's best to create a separate space for each person. That way, everyone can go to their own spaces when they're feeling the need. It gives each person something that is all their own, which makes it more special.

Include a Notebook or Journal

Everyone should have some sort of notebook or journal kept in their happy space. This allows you the opportunity to write down your thoughts if you want to. Try to use it as a place to take note of something positive that happened in your day. Doing so can help to focus your thoughts on the good rather than the negative. It can help put you into a better mindset.

Add an Activity You Enjoy

Having some sort of activity you enjoy available in your space can be beneficial as well. It's a great way to reduce stress. If you like to paint, include paint supplies. If you enjoy coloring, have some crayons and coloring books nearby. Perhaps you enjoy strumming your guitar. Keep your instrument in this space.

Make It Relaxing

You can have a desk and chair set up with all your favorite activities if you want. You can also opt for a more relaxing happy space that helps with your stress levels. A bean bag chair in your closet with a shelf of your stuff works just as well. Maybe you have a reading nook in your window that you can add shelves to. Make the space relaxing and comfortable for you.

Place Inspirational Quotes In the Area

Having some of your favorite inspirational quotes printed out and placed in your area can help. It allows you to see them and read them as you're sitting there -- most likely in need of their uplifting advice. It can help to change your perspective if you're feeling angry or sad, realizing that you need to do better to live by these words. "Let your dreams be bigger than your fears." "It's your life, live it well." "May you see sunshine where others see shadows." These are all great quotes to include, but you should only add the ones that speak to you best.

Managing stress means finding coping skills that work. Having a personal happy space within your home that you can go to when you're feeling overwhelmed is one option. It's a space that's all your own, filled with things that spark joy or inspire you. It should be a place that helps to lift your spirits and ease your stress.
