Have a Worthwhile Picnic With These Tips

By Brandi Goodman

A picnic is a common pastime for the spring and summer seasons. Grab a blanket, a basket of food, and your family or friends and head just about anywhere to relax and enjoy a meal together outside. Not all picnics are created equal, though. You should do what you can to have a worthwhile and healthy picnic that's better for your well-being.

Pack Crisp Veggies

Nothing satisfies hunger quite like crunchy food. Pack crisp veggies that offer satisfaction in more than one way. Carrots, cucumbers, and celery are a few common choices. You can bring along single-serving cups of peanut butter or veggie dip to use if someone doesn't prefer a plain option.

Bring Bottled Water

The healthiest thing you can drink is water. Make sure you pack enough bottled water for everyone. Some locations, such as a park, may have a water fountain available, but you should never count on that. Some may be out of commission or look less than ideal. Having enough water for everyone attending the picnic is crucial for keeping everyone hydrated and energized.

Pack an Activity

You shouldn't spend your entire picnic just sitting and eating. Burn off some of those calories by enjoying an activity together. You can pack a frisbee, boomerang, or ball to toss. It will get everyone up on their feet and provide a great bonding experience.

Make Wraps Instead of Sandwiches

Most versions of bread have more calories and carbs than needed. A sandwich is one of the most popular picnic items, though. Instead of this common choice, why not make up wraps instead? It's still a handheld option, but you won't have as many calories or carbs in one tortilla as you do two slices of bread. You can even find whole wheat options or even cheese wraps instead.

Walk or Bike There

Instead of hopping in the car and driving everyone to the picnic spot, a healthier alternative is to walk or bike there. You'll be working up an appetite by the time you get there and can burn calories when you make your way home. Find a local spot nearby that's easy to get to so you don't have such a far way to go. Otherwise, drive to the destination and then take a walk around the area once you're there.

You can enjoy a picnic in so many places, in so many ways. Keep these tips in mind for the most worthwhile and healthy picnic that makes the activity even more memorable for you and your loved ones.
