Tips for Flying with Back Pain

By Sara Butler

With summer right around the corner, you may be thinking about trips you plan to take -- or dreaming of trips you want to. Most of the time, these trips involve sitting in an airplane for hours at a time. For most people, it's not a huge deal -- but if you struggle with back pain, then it can be. The chiropractors at The Joint Chiropractic have a few tips to help those with back pain fly more comfortably so you can reach your destination pain-free.

Before You Fly

It's important to plan your flight before your feet ever leave the ground. Try to minimize the amount of time it takes you to reach your destination by choosing direct flights or flights with short layovers. You should also aim for flights that won't be as crowded and flights that leave very early in the morning if possible.

If you need assistance, then contact the airline ahead of time to arrange things such as assistance during the boarding process or having the staff load your carry-on luggage for you.

Give Your Spine Support

The best thing to do when you're on a plane is to get up and move around, but this isn't always an option if the captain doesn't turn off the seat belt sign. When you're unable to get up, support your spine by:

  • Bringing lumbar support or using a rolled-up T-shirt or towel instead of a small travel pillow between your seat and lower back
  • Using a neck pillow
  • Wearing a back brace for the flight if your chiropractor recommends it

Of course, when possible make sure you do get up from your seat and walk to the restroom simple to stretch and get out of the position you've been sitting in.

Think About Posture

Even though you're simply sitting in an airplane seat, you still need to think about your posture or you could end up with an aching neck and back when it's time to depart. To help reduce stress and strain placed on your spine when you fly, you should make sure to:

  • Keep your feet flat on the floor
  • Request an aisle seat if you have long legs so you can stretch out
  • Keep your knees in line with your hips to keep the strain off your lower back
  • Avoid leaning to one side or slouching
