4 Healthy Ways to Use Pork

By Brandi Swieter

National Pork Month in October doesn't have to be the only time people consume the meat. Though it may not be quite as lean as turkey or chicken, some versions of pork still provide a low calorie, protein-rich meal that is worthwhile to eat. Healthy ways exist to use pork that make it even better to consume on a more regular basis.

Baked Pork Tenderloin with Veggies

A tenderloin is one of the lower calorie options when it comes to pork. A three-ounce serving contains roughly 120 calories. Bake the loin rather than frying it for an even healthier outcome. Surround the meat with veggies for a healthy and protein-packed meal that is sure to keep everyone full and satisfied.

Apple and Ham Stuffing

Ham is another solid choice. It tends to be higher in calories than pork chops, but still offers lots of benefits. It can also be diced up and added to a dish rather than consumed whole. An apple and ham stuffing makes a great side dish for a fall meal. Using whole wheat bread helps to make the meal more healthy. Cooks can also substitute unsweetened applesauce for any butter or oil the recipe would otherwise require. With apples, celery, onion, ham, and whole wheat bread, this stuffing is a lovely fall concoction with lots of nutrients.

Egg Stuffed Peppers

Breakfast can utilize pork as well. Scoop out some green, red, or yellow peppers and make room for an omelette inside. Fill with eggs, diced ham, onion, and a low-fat cheese for a tasty and easy meal in the morning.

Pork Lo Mein

Many Chinese dishes are said to be unhealthy due to the extra oil used during cooking. Some dishes also contain MSG. Making a healthy pork lo mein dish is possible, however. The lighter version uses boneless pork loin, reduced sodium broth and soy sauce, green onions, lo mein noodles, and grated fresh ginger. It isn't recommended as an everyday meal but can curb those Chinese buffet cravings once in a while.

Pork can be eaten in a number of ways to make it beneficial for the body. With lots of protein and vitamins, the meat has quite a few advantages over other food options out there. It may not be ideal on a daily food list, but it can be enjoyed in moderation for a tasty dish packed with nutrition.
