Shifting Your Focus Away From Your Anxiety
By Brandi Goodman
People with constant anxiety, or even those who simply feel anxious from time to time, may find it difficult to get out of their own heads. Whatever is making you feel anxious tends to take over, consuming all of your thoughts and feelings. Shifting your focus away from your anxiety and trying to distract yourself with an activity is a great way to help. There are many ways in which you can do this.
Sweat Out the Anxiety
Exercise is one of the best ways to shift your focus away from your struggles. When you're out of breath and feeling your muscles aching, your mind will have something different to settle on for a while. Some people prefer to take a walk while others opt for a run. You can swing, jump rope, swim, ride a bike, or choose any other activity you desire. Get your body moving and fully immerse yourself in the activity so your mind can clear from your troubles.
Use Your Creativity
Doing something creative requires a lot of mental focus. Your mind will be concentrating on the project at hand instead of the worries you have. Adult coloring books have become so popular for a reason. They take us back to our childhoods and allow our minds to be free of whatever is burdening them for a little while. You can paint an object, draw a picture, make a birdhouse, or choose any other creative project of your liking.
Wash Something By Hand
Washing something by hand is a terrific way to help also wash away your thoughts. Head outside and wash your car or bike or stay indoors and wash a sink full of dishes or a tub full of laundry. The act of cleaning something with hot soapy water will help to cleanse your mind as well.
Find the Humor
Laughter helps our health in numerous ways. Find the humor in something so you can spend time laughing instead of worrying about whatever is making you anxious or upset. Turn on one of your favorite comedy movies or watch some funny videos online. Hang out with friends that you know always make you laugh and enjoy yourself. Laughing can feel very freeing.
Anxiety, stress, depression, and other struggles tend to take over the mind and have us sinking into a dark place. We tend to let all of our worries be at the forefront of our experiences. Shifting the focus to something better can help to combat these feelings and help us see that our troubles aren't all we have. There is good around us everywhere.
