Healthy To-Go Orders Made Possible

By Brandi Goodman

With apps such as DoorDash, Grubhub, and more becoming so widely available, online food delivery has quickly become the norm. If you want to enjoy some of your favorite dishes from your favorite restaurants, just select home delivery from these services. Don't forget to watch what you're ordering though, and make some healthy choices. Healthy to-go orders are made possible when you know what you're looking for to check that health box.

Check the Website's Menu

Even if your delivery service app doesn't have the nutrition facts, you can look at the restaurant's own website to discover these details. Check out the website's menu to see if they made their nutrition information available. Even a fast food place such as McDonald's has a calorie count listed by each food item. You can click on the nutrition summary to see further details. The amount of fiber, saturated fat, sugar, iron, and more are described. If you see high calories, sugar, and fat, it means the meal should be skipped and you should look for something more healthy.

Make Substitutions

Some apps allow you to remove certain ingredients or make substitutions as they're available. You may be able to remove the bacon off a burger, for example, or opt for a whole wheat bun instead of one made with white flour. Making just one small change can drastically improve the nutritional factor of your meal.

Find the Healthiest Side Dish

Lots of meals come with fries. Let's face it. No matter how much you may like the tasty potato-made dish, it doesn't really like you. Fried foods are bad for your heart and health. Find the healthiest side dish you can instead. This usually means ordering a side of veggies or some apple slices rather than what it comes with initially.

Look for a Baked or Grilled Version

As was already mentioned, fried foods are not good for you. Look for a baked or grilled version instead to improve the nutrition. It's much healthier to eat a piece of grilled chicken than it is to eat a breaded version.

Skip the Drink

Chances are, you have tap water at home. Drinking that is far healthier than any of the sugar-packed beverages you can choose when ordering delivery or eating out. Soda pop, lemonade, shakes, and worse will add far more sugar and calories to your meal than you need. Enjoy the food instead and just drink water. It can save your health -- and your wallet.

Healthy to-go orders are always possible. You just need to watch what you're choosing and make sure you're selecting some nutritious options. There's always at least one thing on the menu that's worth it to put in your body. You can of course indulge once in a while, but it shouldn't be a regular habit for your health's sake.
