Hitting the Weights May Help as We Age
By Tom Herrin
Most of us probably think of working with weights as being something for those who are younger. After all, we often think in terms of someone wearing some kind of tights with bulging muscles. In reality, we can build strength without the appearance of being a weightlifter. Those of us who are older can still reap plenty of benefits from working out with weights. As a matter of fact, it may be a great way to maintain our health as we move into our older years, so we should set aside stereotypes and educate ourselves on some ways it can improve our quality of life.
Shed the Look
We all know the look people seem to have when they appear older, as if they are frail and/or losing much of their physical ability. We often notice our friends who once looked very fit now look soft, overweight, and less able to perform much physical activity. Some of this is due to a loss of muscle mass. Working with weights can help to preserve muscle and increase metabolism. This may help to burn fat as well and provide us with an appearance of being much more fit. It also enables us to utilize the nutrients we take in better.
Remain Independent
Most of us do not look forward to a time in which we must depend on others for our care. When we work with weights, we are able to preserve muscle which allows us to do more basic things for ourselves. This may include anything from getting up and walking to lifting things and doing simple things around the house. When we protect our strength, we also protect our lifestyle. None of us wants to give this up and depend on others.
We May Have Better Mental Function
Mental abilities may relate to a lot of other issues. When we work with weights, we may be able to have a better supply of oxygen to the brain. Our responses may be sharper and faster. If we are physically stronger, we may have greater confidence and be able to think clearer. This can all add up to a good combination in which we are able to perform better. It may also help us to sleep better, thus keeping us more alert and sharper.
