How to Care for Your Teeth to Make Them Last

By Genevieve Cunningham

Most people run across problems with their teeth at one point or another. A cavity or two can be normal. Stains can be normal. But after we lose our baby teeth, we only get one set. So taking care of them is extremely important. In America, we’re not the best at caring for our teeth. A large percentage of the population will suffer from tooth decay and gum disease. So isn’t there anything we can do to protect ourselves? If you’re interested in keeping your smile pearly white and healthy, take a look at these tips for making it happen.

Brush and Floss

This seems like a no-brainer, but a lot of people skip regular brushing and flossing. They get in too late and are too tired. They eat something after they brush and then don’t brush again. They simply have poor habits. But when it comes to the health of your teeth, brushing and flossing is absolutely critical to success. If you’re not in a good habit, set a timer or make yourself a schedule. Do whatever it takes to create the habit of removing plaque and bacteria from your teeth.

Improve Your Diet

Diet has a lot to do with every aspect of your health, and your teeth are no exception. If you’re eating a diet that is high in sugar, you’re certainly not doing your teeth any favors. Bacteria in the mouth loves sugar. Cut back on this sweet substance as much as you can, and if you do consume sugar, make sure that you brush quickly after.

See a Dentist

A lot of people have anxiety about seeing the dentist, and it’s understandable as to why. Having someone poke around in your mouth can be scary! But if you want to keep your teeth healthy, you should definitely see a dentist on a regular basis. A dentist can help thoroughly clean your teeth and spot any problems before they arise. Even if you don’t carry dental insurance, you can likely find a professional who will work with you. Find one in your area, set an appointment, and make dental health a thing in your life.

It’s really important to take care of your teeth … much more important than most people realize. Use these tips to get your dental care habits under control and protect your teeth. With a little care and some better habits, you may be able to enjoy your smile for years to come.
