How to Fight Back at Bad Habits
By Genevieve Cunningham
Everyone has bad habits. Whether you eat a little too much, watch a little too much TV, or drink a few too many sodas every day, bad habits can significantly impact our overall health. But by their very nature, bad habits are incredibly hard to break. The good news is that it's absolutely not impossible. If you need a little help fighting back at your bad habits, take a look at these tips that can help you get moving in the right direction for a healthier life starting today.
Accept Them
The first thing you have to do is recognize and accept your bad habits. If you don't, you won't really know what to change. Try to step back and look at yourself and your habits objectively. Once you're able to do this, you can determine which of your habits is worth the effort of breaking. If you have a lot of habits, just choose one or two to tackle at a time. Accept that these are present, accept that they have to change, and accept that it's a long process that you can absolutely accomplish.
Form New Habits
It's easier to replace habits than it is to completely eliminate them. Why? Because our bodies and minds are used to doing something. If you smoke, replace it with gum or water or a healthy snack. If you drink soda, replace it with a flavored water. The new habit is meant to take the place of the old bad habit -- whether that be temporarily or permanently. Let your new habit be the guide and help you kick the old habit to the curb.
Get Positive
It doesn't matter what you're trying to accomplish, a positive attitude is a game changer. If you're about to tackle those bad habits, get your mind right first. Think positive thoughts. Tell yourself that you can do it! The more positive you are, the more likely you are to find success.
Yes, it can be tough to break bad habits. We've made these bad habits a part of who we are. We're used to them being in our lives. But breaking them is absolutely not impossible. Use these tips to help you get moving in the right direction, and you'll have healthier habits and a healthier life before you know it.
