Why You Should Consider a Mental Health Day

By Genevieve Cunningham

Mental health is a serious issue. Even if you're not plagued with major depression or another diagnosed illness, you can still suffer mentally. You can still suffer mental strife and the side effects that come with it. Luckily, we live in a world that is much more open to talking about mental wellness. And yet -- there are still so many people who ignore the issues. If you're among those who rarely focuses on your personal mental health, take a look at these great reasons to take a mental health day in order to preserve your wellness moving forward.

To Lower Overall Stress

Stress is a silent killer. Not only does it affect your body in a physical manner, but it can do a number on your mental well-being. Taking a mental health day allows you to breathe through the stress. It allows you to relax and let go of the worries over work and finances and other obligations. If you're feeling a lot of stress in your life -- no matter where the stress comes from -- consider a mental health day to relax, unwind, and lower stress.

To Prevent Burnout

Burnout is real. Unfortunately, very few do anything to prevent burnout. We just go and go and go until we can't take it anymore. But taking a mental health day may help prevent this seemingly inevitable moment. A mental health day gives us a much needed break. It gives us a chance to breathe. It breaks the norm. If you're constantly on the go, consider a mental health day to stop the potential for burnout in its tracks.

Because You Deserve It

All too often, we assume that we don't deserve to take a break. We think that we need to work harder and give more. While working hard is certainly a good idea, it's also important to allow rest. The truth is that you deserve a day to care for yourself mentally. But it's not just you -- it's every person. We need mental health days to improve quality of life. If you keep your nose to the grindstone out of obligation or guilt, take a day just because your life and its overall quality is worth it.

Mental health days aren't just excuses to skip work. They're days dedicated to recharging your batteries and improving your mental well-being. If you need a day, take it. Protect yourself and your mental wellness by putting yourself first. Your mental health matters, so make a point to take a day when you need it and feel your best starting today.
