3 Good Reasons to Move Up Your Bedtime

It seems as though people come in two distinct groups when it comes to bedtimes: early birds and night owls. While there’s nothing necessarily wrong with belonging to either group, studies show that it might be slightly more beneficial to your health and wellness to be an early bird, especially when it comes to bedtimes. If you tend to stay up too late, take a look at these good reasons to move your bedtime up and improve your health at the same time.
You May Get More Sleep Overall
People who go to bed a little earlier tend to get a bit more sleep as a whole. When you stay up late, chances are good that you still have to wake up at the same time. So whether you’re going to bed at 10 or 12, you’re probably still required to get up at 6 a.m. Going to bed earlier means getting a few more hours of sleep on the front end, which hopefully means less catching up later in the day.
You May Be More Productive
Research has shown time and again that early birds tend to be more productive than night owls. While those staying up late can definitely still be successful and productive, going to bed and getting up earlier provides more available working hours during the time when you’re alert. Many people find that a simple shift of sleeping hours changes their working environment and productivity for the better.
You May Have Lower Risk of Disease
Perhaps it’s because early bedtimes mean more sleep overall, but those who get to bed at a reasonable hour (and wake up too!) have lower risk of major diseases such as diabetes and heart disease. If you’re borderline for these diseases, getting good sleep may help protect your body just a tiny bit more. While it’s definitely not a cure or 100 percent preventable, getting proper sleep may help reduce your chances of suffering by just a bit.
Staying up late is often tempting, especially in the summer months. We like to stay up late and break the normal routine during the summer. But it might be a better and healthier choice to stick with a decent bedtime year round. Get your body and mind on a good sleep schedule, and enjoy the many boosts to health that come with it.
