How Hobbies Can Totally Save Your Life
By Genevieve Cunningham
Hobbies. Do you have any? Most kids and young adults have at least a few hobbies. It might be sports or exercise. It might be video games. It might be building model cars or airplanes. As we get older, we often get so busy that we forget all about our favorite hobbies. We let our interests fall by the wayside in favor of more work and responsibility. And while some of these responsibilities can't and shouldn't be avoided, it's still so important to keep hobbies in your life. In fact, hobbies might very well save your health! If you're guilty of leaving your favorite activities behind, take a look at these three reasons why you should add them back into the routine today.
They Keep Your Mind Busy
Idle minds and hands aren't a good combination. We need our minds to be busy and engaged. This can help keep our minds challenged, which may ward off potential cognitive issues. Giving your mind something to focus on can also lower stress and improve quality of life. Boredom isn't anyone's friend. If you want to stay healthy and happy, picking up a hobby or two is a great start.
They Give You Purpose
We all need purpose. For many, that purpose lies within family or work. But we need purpose that is personal. Something that is solely for us and that we can take with us if we lose our job or after our families are grown. Hobbies allow us to find this purpose. Choose something that really speaks to your interests, and then dive in. In the long run, finding this kind of purpose boosts mental health and makes everyday life more enjoyable.
They Help You Stay Active
One of our absolute worst enemies in life is inactivity. Unfortunately, it's all too easy to become inactive. But hobbies can help beat this problem. Hobbies keep us moving in one way or another. They keep us constantly working and playing all at the same time. If you think staying active will ever be an issue in your life, go ahead and pick up a hobby right now to keep the problem at bay.
It's so easy to get caught up in life and forget about hobbies. We have so many other things going on! But if you want to stay healthy -- mentally, emotionally, and physically -- then hobbies are a must. Find one (or many!) that suit your interests, and get busy living and loving your life.
