4 Ways Your Body is Asking for Rest

By Genevieve Cunningham

There aren't very many people in the world who truly get enough rest. In America, we're all too busy with work and activities to make rest a priority. And we're suffering! The problem is that we often don't even realize that our health is suffering. We might know that we feel tired, but that's it. If we learn our body's cues, we may realize that it's often telling us -- begging us -- to give it some rest. If you're unfamiliar with the signs, take a look at these ways that your body is asking for rest.

Aches and Sore Spots

It's easy to ignore aches in the body, especially if you get them all the time. But these little aches and pains in the body -- backaches and stiff necks and even stiff muscles -- might be happening simply because your body is so exhausted. Pay attention to these pains. If they pop up when you've been up for a long time or when you're seriously feeling a nap, then they might be a sign that you really need to rest.

Headaches

Headaches happen to everyone, and they can be brought on by a wide array of things. Stress can bring headaches. Illness can bring headaches. And for many, exhaustion can bring headaches too. If you've noticed an increase in the number of headaches you've been experiencing, it might be time to set an early bedtime for a while.

Confusion or Inability to Focus

We need focus throughout the day. We need it to work and to hold conversations. Focus is imperative for being productive and actually getting things done. And if we're lacking sleep, then focus becomes incredibly difficult. If you can't seem to concentrate on anything, try to squeeze in a quick nap and your focus may come back like never before.

Irritability

Everyone is familiar with this concept. When you're tired, you're so irritable! But how many of us actually stop and pay attention to this sign? Maybe it's time to stop thinking of irritability as normal, and instead think of it more honestly. It's a warning, and if we would give out bodies more rest, we may get rid of that bad mood once and for all.

We have to get more rest. We need it for good health, good moods, and a good life. If these symptoms are showing up in your life, your body may be trying to tell you something. Make more time for rest, and enjoy the boost in life that comes with it.
