Common Sense Tips for a Better Diet

By Genevieve Cunningham

Sometimes we make healthy eating really hard. We think we have to completely change everything in our cabinets and refrigerators all at once. We think we can never eat our guilty pleasure ever again. But most of the time, we don't have to take on so much at one time. Instead of going all in, we can just use a little common sense to make better choices. If you're ready to improve your diet and get on a healthier path, take a look at these common sense tips to help you do it.

Drink Water Over Soda

Soda is just not good for us. We drink it anyway, and our health suffers as a result. Want a super easy tip? Just stop drinking soda. Easier said than done, right? Instead, choose water as much as possible. You'll consume less sugar, less caffeine, and fewer empty calories. Of course, while this is simple, it's not easy. You'll have to really make up your mind make it happen, and then give yourself some time to break the addiction and make it work.

Skip Fried Foods

In the south, we love fried food. We love fried everything! But fried food, as a general rule, isn't terribly healthy. It contains more calories, more grease, and fewer essential nutrients. Instead of reaching for the fryer, look for a baked or grilled option. This step alone, depending on how much fried food you regularly eat, can save massive calories and may even lead to weight loss.

Don't Buy Junk

Believe it or not, you have control over what comes into your home. If you want to eat healthy, stop buying junk. Don't buy prepackaged snacks. Don't buy the little sweets. Don't buy sodas and chips and convenience food. Instead, slowly replace the food in your house with healthier options so that when you're ready to reach for a snack, you'll have to choose something good for your health.

Don't make healthy eating so hard! Don't overthink it. Don't make too many rules all at once. Just use a little common sense and take it slowly. With some time and patience, you can totally transform your health and menu in a way that makes it last for years to come.
